PCD Increases the Productivity of Machining CFRP for the Aerospace Industry

Carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) is a composite material widely used in the aerospace industry due to its high strength-to-weight ratio. It offers a range of benefits, including weight savings, corrosion resistance, fatigue resistance, design flexibility, and improved fuel efficiency. These benefits make CFRP an attractive material for aerospace applications where high performance and efficiency are critical.

However, machining CFRP is challenging due to its anisotropic, abrasive, and heterogeneous nature, which causes it to delaminate and lead to part failure. Delamination of CFRP parts can slow down productivity and decrease structural integrity.

Polycrystalline diamond (PCD) is an excellent choice for machining CFRP due to its superior hardness and wear resistance. PCD, a synthetic diamond material composed of diamond particles bonded together by a metallic binder, has a high thermal conductivity, which helps dissipate the heat generated during machining, minimizing delamination, tool wear, and workpiece damage.
