HPHT Press Applications

Hyperion's HPHT tools, crafted from tungsten carbide, Versimax™ silicon diamond composite material, and Compax™ wire die blanks, stand out in the industry. They can be customized as anvils, dies, punches, and cubes, with optional grinding, truncations, and tailormade designs available. These tools, unique in their ability to withstand the necessary pressure and temperature for stable product creation, significantly enhance the pressing performance and efficiency of the cubic, belt, and Paris-Edinburgh presses.

Cubic Presses

Cubic presses, a type of HPHT (High-Pressure, High-Temperature) machine, are invaluable for creating synthetic diamonds and other superhard materials. Hyperion produces tungsten carbide and Versimax™ silicon diamond composite material to develop dies, anvils, and punches for cubic presses. Cubic presses replicate the extreme conditions of pressure and temperature found deep underground, where natural diamonds form. The two types of cubic presses, Tie Rod and Link Style, both produce the industry-recognized sintered diamond and tungsten carbide composite, known as a polycrystalline diamond cutter (PDC), showcasing the versatility and value of these machines.

Belt Presses

Belt presses, another innovative HPHT apparatus, utilize a continuous belt system to produce superhard materials in high-volume operations. With their continuous material feed, these presses offer significantly higher throughput and scalability than cubic presses. The pressure is applied using punches as the material travels through the pressurized zone of the belt press, ensuring a smooth and efficient production process. Hyperion manufactures tungsten carbide, used to develop the punches for belt presses.

Paris-Edinburgh Presses

Paris-Edinburgh presses, also known as multi-anvil or toroidal presses, are a versatile HPHT apparatus that provides uniform pressure distribution throughout the superhard material synthesis. Hyperion utilizes Versimax™ silicon diamond composite material, Compax™ wire die blanks, and tungsten carbide to develop anvils for Paris-Edinburgh presses. With their unique multi-anvil design, Paris-Edinburgh presses are suitable for a wider range of shapes and sizes compared to cubic and belt presses. This versatility opens up a world of possibilities for researchers, allowing them to explore material properties under various pressure conditions, sparking new avenues of discovery.

FAQs about HPHT Tools

High-pressure, high-temperature (HPHT) tools are a set of pieces integrated into pressing machines designed to withstand and operate in extreme heat and pressure environments. These types of presses include belt, cubic, and toroidal (Paris-Edinburgh) presses.

Hyperion develops several HPHT tools to improve performance efficiency, durability, and reliability in HPHT environments. Developed in tungsten carbide, Versimax™ silicon diamond composite material, or Compax™ wire die blanks, Hyperion produces dies, punches, anvils and cubes. Optional grinding and tailormade designs are available upon request.

Choosing the right HPHT tool for your correct application depends on your application's pressure and temperature requirements, desired material properties, and sample size. Hyperion offers a team of experts to help you choose the most suitable tools for your needs.

HPHT (High-Pressure, High-Temperature) tools are used in various applications requiring extreme pressure and temperature conditions. These applications include creating synthetic diamonds and other superhard materials, such as cubic boron nitride (CBN), polycrystalline cubic boron nitride (PCBN), synthetic diamonds, polycrystalline diamonds (PCD), synthesized gem diamonds, and in research institutes and labs for geothermal studies.

HPHT tools provide several benefits in improving performance efficiency, durability, and reliability in HPHT environments. They are specifically focused on improving press cycles and establishing a longer lifespan. HPHT tools also provide high-quality material synthesis, consistent and uniform pressure distribution, and increased operational efficiency.

A few differences exist between tungsten carbide material and Versimax™ composite diamond material for your HPHT tools. Versimax™ material is electrically conductive and provides HPHT presses with superior pressure generation, exceptional thermal stability, high thermal conductivity, flexible geometries, and transparency to X-rays. Versimax™ can be used to produce anvils and cubes with and without truncations. Tungsten carbide material tools provide higher output, resulting in higher yields when pressing at pressures >55 kBars (1 million PSI) and temperatures >1500°C, depending on the carbide grade selected. Tungsten carbide tools are produced in larger sizes than Versimax, making them an exceptional choice for developing dies, anvils, and punches for HPHT applications.

Hyperion produces HPHT tools from high-quality materials chosen for their exceptional strength, durability, and resistance to extreme pressure and temperature. These include superhard materials, such as Versimax™ diamond composite material, Compax™ wire die blanks, and cemented tungsten carbide.
